An OSA-CBM Multi-Agent Vehicle Health Management Architecture for Self-Health Awareness
Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) systems on modern aircraft or autonomous unmanned vehicles should provide diagnostic and prognostic capabilities with lower support costs and amount of data traffic. When mission objectives cannot be reached for the control system since unanticipated operating conditions exists, namely a failure, the mission plan must be revised or altered according to the health monitoring system assessment. Representation of the system health knowledge must facilitate interaction with the control system to compensate for subsystem degradation. Several generic architectures have been described for the implementation of health monitoring systems and their integration with the control system. In particular, the Open System Architecture - Condition-Based Maintenance (OSA-CBM) approach is considered in this work as initial point, and it is evolved in the sense of self-health awareness, by defining an appropriated multi-agent smart health management architecture based on smart device models, communication agents and a distributed control system. A case study about its application on fuel-cells as auxiliary power generator will demonstrate the integration.Postprint (published version
Mesures de qualitat de vida i satisfacció ciutadana: noves tendències, subjectivitat i canvi d'escala
Peer Reviewe

Who is a Better Tutor? Gaze Hints with a Human or Humanoid Tutor in Game Play
In this paper, we present a study that analyses the effects of robot or human gaze hints on people's choices in a card game. We asked human participants to play a matching card game in the presence of a human or a robotic tutor. Our aim was to find out if gaze hints
provided by the tutor can direct the attention and influence the choices of the human participants. The results show that participants performed significantly better when they received gaze hints from a tutor than when they did not. Furthermore, we found that people identified the tutor hints more often in robot condition than in human condition and, as a result, performed significantly better.Postprint (published version
ENGAGE-DEM: a model of engagement of people with dementia
One of the most effective ways to improve quality of life in dementia is by exposing people to meaningful activities.
The study of engagement is crucial to identify which activities are significant for persons with dementia and customize them. Previous work has mainly focused on developing assessment tools and the only available model of engagement for people with dementia focused on factors influencing engagement or influenced by engagement. This paper focuses on the internal functioning of engagement and presents the development and testing of a model specifying the components of engagement, their measures, and the relationships they entertain. We collected behavioral and physiological data while participants with dementia (N=14) were involved in six sessions of play, three of game-based cognitive stimulation and three of robot-based free play. We tested the concurrent validity of the measures employed to gauge engagement and ran factorial analysis and Structural Equation Modeling to determine whether the components of engagement and their relationships were those hypothesized. The model we constructed, which we call the ENGAGE-DEM, achieved excellent goodness of fit and can be considered a scaffold to the development of affective computing frameworks for measuring engagement online and offline, especially in HCI and HRI.Postprint (author's final draft
Ambulatory mobility characterization using body inertial system: an application to fall detection
The aim of this paper is to study the use of a prototype of wearable device for long term monitoring of gait and balance using inertial sensors. First, it is focused on the design of the device that can be used all day during the patient daily life activities, because it is small, usable and non invasive. Secondly, we present the system calibration to ensure the quality of the sensors data. Afterwodrs, we focus in the experimental methodology for data harvest from extensive types of falls. Finally a statistical analysis allows us to determine the discriminant information to detect falls.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft
Interval-valued feature selection
In this paper we introduce the use of interval variables
in classification problems of time series
signals. By introducing the concept of interval kernel
as a similarity measure among intervals, modifications
for some well-known feature selection
methods are developed in order to apply these methods
to select the most relevant interval variables.
A comparison against standard point attributes feature
selection (Relief and FSDD) is made for purposes
of validation .Peer ReviewedPreprin
